Ribbon-cutting ceremony for Pettis Park pickleball courts on March 12

NEW SMYRNA BEACH—February 27, 2019

Members of the New Smyrna Beach Pickleball Club will be out in force on Tuesday, March 12 at 9:00 AM when the City of New Smyrna Beach cuts the ribbon on two new pickleball courts at Pettis Park (800 Mary Avenue).  Following the ceremony, members of the Pickleball Club will participate in exhibition matches on the new courts, which in addition to three recently completed outside of the newly refurbished City Gym, increase the City’s total inventory to 12.

Completion of this project marks the beginning of a new chapter for the courts on Pettis Park.  During 2017’s Hurricane Irma, windscreens were torn off and water under the foundation created surface cracks so large net poles began to shift and play without risk of injury became difficult.  The Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Advisory Board then recommended using CDBG funds to the City Commission to repair the pre-existing tennis courts with new striping added to allow for pickleball play as well.

“These upgrades are only the beginning of improvements for Pettis Park,” said Community Resources Coordinator Donna Banks.  “By early spring there will be a new playground, which was also a project recommended by the CDBG Advisory Board.  With all of these new features, the 4-acre park that sits in the beautiful Historic Westside will be a gem of a park with something for everyone.  The CDBG Advisory Board, Volusia County, and the City are very excited about this and hope to collaborate on other projects in the future.”

New Smyrna Beach Pickleball Club President Jim Brown, whose members contributed to the project by sanding and repainting a nearby pavilion, also weighed in, “Members are anxious for completion of the Pettis Park project and we will have a number of pickleball players at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.  My thanks to the City for involving us and I am sure our players will be using the courts on a regular basis.”
